The GenNext show, featuring seven designers, commenced with dim lighting and the name "Gaga" displayed on massive screens. The atmosphere was charged with excitement as the audience consisted mainly of young students. However, this was not a Lady Gaga concert; instead, it marked the beginning of the Summer/Resort edition of Lakme Fashion Week.
The showcase presented the creations of designer Tanya Sharma's label, 'Gaga,' along with six other labels, resulting in a diverse collection. While Sharma's line did not offer a fresh take on hip hop, with its inclusion of net saris, polka dots, and vibrant floral prints for both men and women, there were other designers who exhibited promise. Notably, Yogesh Chaudhary, a graduate of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and the National Institute of Design (NID), incorporated stripes, box pleats, and mirror work in his collection titled 'In a Box.' His striped sari and sheer skirts made a striking impression. The duo of Manoj Kumar and Vinod Bhardwaj, based in Chandigarh, captivated the audience with their banyan tree-inspired line, which featured jute shrugs and wooden belts embedded in long, flowing dresses in earthy green and brown tones.
Prashant Chauhan injected a burst of color into the event with his vibrant collection named 'Daughters of Tibet.' Remaining true to the Tibetan theme, he incorporated appliquéd and embroidered panel borders. However, the use of wool and faux fur seemed out of place for a summer/resort event.
Lastly, Shikha Grover and Vinita Adhikare's label, Ilk, skillfully combined opaque and sheer fabrics in a collection of asymmetric dresses, shorts, looped collars, and draped midis titled 'I Lose Myself.' The overall visual appeal did not go unnoticed by the audience.
A Fusion of Fashion
Shivan and Narresh merged two lines, Mosaic and Handicraft, for their show. The former featured jumpsuits, rompers, trousers, and sarongs that employed vibrant color blocking techniques. On the other hand, the latter segment showcased bespoke swimwear, emphasizing braiding, draping, and embellishments, while avoiding stitching. The lampshade-shaped headpieces added a touch of drama to the presentation.
Refreshing Sorbet
As anticipated, Masaba Gupta's show injected glamour into the event. Neena Gupta, the renowned actress, arrived an hour before the show, while Rhea Kapoor, daughter of Anil Kapoor and a producer herself, made a timely appearance to support Masaba. Prateik served as the showstopper, garnering additional applause for the designer. The collection featured palazzo saris, Patiala salwars, cropped tops, tunics, and waistcoats, dominated by camera and cow motifs, exuding a quirky vibe. The color palette, boasting baby pink, lemon yellow, pista green, along with black and white, perfectly complemented the collection's name, 'Sorbet.' This collection exuded a playful and fun spirit throughout.
